“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” — Jane Goodall
Earth Day is a time to reflect and be thankful for everything the Earth has given us. It is also a time to strengthen our relationship with nature, to give back, and to think of ways we can work to better support the Earth for coming generations.
Ironically, this year’s Earth Day is taking place during one of the most widespread and deadly pandemics the world has seen for generations. As am writing this blog, there are over 2.5 million cases of coronavirus and 171,850 deaths worldwide according to Worldmeters.info. We all nervously watching the coronavirus pandemic play out, strict measures are being imposed to stem the spread of COVID-19 have forced the world’s population into lockdown.
As a result, any gatherings or other in-person events have had to be canceled — but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate the occasion while sheltering in place.
While humans have locked up themselves inside their homes as part of safety measures against the pandemic the skies, seas and rivers have become cleaner and quieter and highways have emptied, leading to a dramatic drop in air pollution across the globe. In many places animals have come out of their homes and are roaming freely without any fear of danger from humans.
Let’s Act Today
We need to show the same determination and unity against climate change concerns that we are showing against COVID-19. We need to act together in the interests of the health and welfare of humanity not just for the coming weeks and months, but for many generations ahead. Today on the 50th anniversary of World Earth Day I am challenging all you who are reading this blog to plant a tree today itself. Let’s act today.
